DESIGN YOUR GARDENT TO FIT THE LIFESTYLE OF YOUR FAMILY

Thursday, February 19, 2009

WITH proper planning, you can turn part of your sprawling garden into an ideal covered venue for hosting parties and family get-togethers—without spending a huge sum.

“It’s best that you consult a professional to help you plan your project,” says accountant-turned-design consultant Tess Vargas. “Otherwise, you might end up spending more redoing costly mistakes. But in the absence of a professional, you can still do it on your own by making it simple.”

Rather than go eclectic—a tricky route for the ambitious amateur—stick to a design theme and work around it. For her garden, for instance, Vargas worked around a Southeast Asian theme that complemented her lush plants such as orchids, traveler’s palm, bromeliads, bird of paradise and bird’s nest.

Hardy carabao grass blankets a huge portion of the garden, while medium-size garden rocks cover shaded corners where plants can hardly grow. Because of their lush quality, she also threw in several San Francisco, Boston ferns and potted bougainvillea into the mix.
